Lisa’s Change of Perspective Overnight

Name: Lisa Patel

Age: 61

I used to be naturally a healthy, carefree person since my childhood. Just a month ago, as my 60th birthday approached, I experienced a life-altering event—a heart attack. It all began at night with what I initially brushed off as indigestion, but it quickly escalated into tightness in my chest. My jaw, neck, and shoulders grew tense, and a tingling sensation traveled down my arms. I felt a pale sweat wash over my face. At that moment, an inner voice spoke calmly, urging me to take action: “You are having a heart attack, and you need to get to the hospital.”

Without hesitation, I reached for the aspirin I had on hand and began to chew it, trusting my instincts. Deep down, I never believed I would meet my end, but I knew the severity of the situation. With resolve, I made my way to the hospital, knowing that swift action was critical.

Once in the care of the healthcare team, an EKG confirmed their suspicions—a stent was urgently required. I had a complete blockage of my artery, a staggering 100%. The gravity of the situation hit me, and I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed.

As I reflect on this life-altering experience, I am reminded of the fragility of life and the unpredictability of our health. It serves as a poignant reminder that despite our best efforts, some things are beyond our control. Now, I’m determined to spread awareness among young adults about heart disease and the importance of preventive measures. Mended Hearts Central Ohio has given me a platform to share my story. I’m grateful for the unwavering support of this community, and I’m committed to living a heart-healthy life while supporting others on their journey to recovery.
